2009 – Interview

TR: Do you play any instruments?
TS: Do I play instruments? Uh, well, no… lets say no.
TR: No?
TS: I, I can abuse instruments–
TR: Aw, so can I! [laugh]
TS: [laugh] Well, we have something in common.
TR: [laugh]
TS: All my friends are so talented, so I just kind of– [indecipherable]
TR: Tech from the USA wants to know: I read that you choose your roles carefully, so assuming that this is true, what sort of process (if any) do you use when picking roles, or to audition for?
TS: Uhm, well, I mean, it’s not like I choose, [indecipherable], I kind of– see, the thing is, I don’t have any children, I don’t have uh–
TR: [laugh]
TS: [laugh] Yeah, I know, shocking. And I don’t have a mortgage, and so uhm, you know, I don’t need, I only need money to kind of eat, and buy some beer and stuff– and pay the rent. And so, uhm, I kind of, I can wait, uhm, and I’m not very ambitious about becoming the most, you know, famous person in the world right now, I just–
TR: Yeah
TS: I can wait until the right thing to comes along–
TR: Uh huh
TS: And so how do I know that it’s right, there’s no, there’s no particular thing, you know, sometimes it’s because you get to work, and Phillip Seymour Hoffman is involved, sometimes, you know, the script reminds you, like, of fragments of your childhood, or–
TR: Yeah…
TS: Or the director makes you laugh. You know, it’s the same as with any other decision. It’s a combination of moments that come together. But I think the most important thing is I think I can do the job better than everybody else–
TR: Uh hmm.
TS: And I definitely think– You know, I know I can’t do everything. It’s about finding something I can do, and I can do better than anyone. BUT, the moment I do get to have kids, and I do, you know, have a mortgage, then, fuck it, I’ll do anything.
TR: [laugh]
TS: That’s the thing, the moment you have responsibilities, you’ll need to support the people you love, and you make different decisions.
TR: Uhm, you have had the chance to work with several types of movies from comedies to thrillers, which oneo of these do you find most challenging as an actor?
TS: Uh–
TR: From Gia, Portugal.
TS: [laugh]
TR: Yep [laugh].
TS: Uhm, I find, I find literally all of it challenging–
TR: From Gia, Portugal.
TS: [laugh], from Gia…. Um I find, ah literally all of it challenging. I’m always astonished when I get a job that I want and the moment it starts, like literally I have these constant feelings that I’m not gonna be able to pull it off. I find it very very hard. When I was, when I, I mean like the last film I did, this thing called Waiting For Forever, which was a very intense shoot, like very long days and kind of very short and it was quite, kind of an emotional um, story. I just remember waking up every morning getting up and looking at what I had to achieve for that day and just thinking there is no way I can do this. And so I couldn’t say one is harder than the other, I think every new job seems like its impossible.
TR: What would be you dream role to play and in which kind of movie? From Maria from finland.
TS: My dream role? Um, ah, um, you know I don’t really have a dream role, I suppose it would be something, maybe like a guy, alone, somewhere, um alone in like a, in a, with a sort of complicated um environment like on a mountain or in a forrest or in a desert and so he- and the film was just about him just have to struggle with what was around him as apposed to pretend to have to talk to anybody.
TR: What is your fondest memory when you were working on TBTR?
TS: Oh, I mean, it would just, my kind of over riding, theres this image that I have in my head of us all everyday, kind of 140 of us would assemble like by the sea and it would be very dark because it was early in the morning and we’d all get on this boat and slowly sail out through kind of just black water and then the sun would come up and over the PA system would always be playing 60’s music so you’d have Dylan, Leonard Cohen and the Rolling Stones just beating out and um people would be fishing off the sides and it was just basically it was just there was this general kind of aura of the whole experience, it was just kind of magical. And we made a film like in between all that.
TR: If you could play any other character from TBTR who would you play and why?
TS: Any other character? Ah, wow.
TR: Yep.
TS: I would, there’s this, um, there’s this guy who, he played like the captain of the ship, like this Swedish guy and he was kind of there all the time, but I think in the film, I don’t know how much he was in the film but like I think kind of like, um he’s not on camera that much, so I’d probably play him so then I could watch the film and really enjoy it.
TR: Annie from Russia wants to know what do you like to do in your spare time?
TS: What do I like to do in my spare time? Uh, I dont know, I mean I have a lot of sprare time and so…
TR: Really?
TS: yeah, I try and construct a life thats um, interesting. I just try not to fall into apathy, I’m dying to fall in love, um you know, the same things that everybody else does. And I think I have these kind of hobbies, I like, yeah and sometimes its just, i dont know, i mean its kind of amazing to be alive and sometimes I’m quite good at like um finding…. Ok, no. I’m getting far too romantic right now. Um no, but you know just enjoying, you know sort of exploring whats around.
Emma:Hi, sorry to interrupt, are we able to wrap this up?
TR: Can I have one more question? Um, oh can I have two more?
TS: Yeah, yeah sure you can have as many as you want.
TR: Ok, um Deliah from the USA wants to know when is your actual birthday?
TS: When is my actual birthday? Um, ah in December.
TR: Is it really?
TS: Yep, why? What did everyone think it was?
TR: Well on the internet it says January.
TS: No it’s, it’s December. December, yeah.
TR: Ok. Um, and is there anything else you want to say to your online fanbase?
TS: Oh, I just want to say that I , I’m its amazing like as I said to you, I’m so kind of, I dont know I feel very humbled by the fact that your, that I have an online fanbase and just thank you, thank you very much. I genuinely, I dont know it, you cant be cool about it, like Great! Its so nice. Unless your pretending. Its so nice to have people who know who you are and kind of you know like you a little bit so I, you know, I just want to say that Hi, I like all of you.
TR: Well um thanks for taking the time to do this interview.
TS: Dont worry about it. I hope that your um, public relations goes well.
TR: Thank you.
TS: And um , yeah be safe.
