2009 – Interview

TS: Like–
TR: Was it the clothes or– yeah.
TS: Um, it would have to be the music. [sighs] Like, when– I don’t know. I don’t want to speak for Australia, but when, in England, around then– and obviously, I didn’t grow up in the 60′s, but, like, from what I understand–
TR: Yeah.
TS: It’s kind of– the 1950′s were sort of very conservative, like people going off to war–
TR: Yeah, true.
TS: — and suddenly, these kind of kids were listening to music where, where you had these– like, aliens, almost. Like Mick Jagger in his skinny jeans, and Bob Dylan and Paul McCartney. These guys were singing to them, like– you can be whoever you want to be, and you can love who you want to love. And I think that must have been extraordinary when you’re coming out a period where your parents are saying, basically, “You have to be– me.” [laughs]
TR: [laughs]
TS: Um. And I think, you know, I think what’s amazing about it was that it was the first taste of freedom for a lot of people.
TR: Um, have you ever visited any of your fan sites dedicated to you?
TS: Have I ever– well, I wasn’t expecting– when I heard, was introduced to you– I really, I’ve looked at– I mean, I just want to say, I, I genuinely– it’s, it’s amazing. [shy laugh]
TR: [laughs]
TS: Like, I– I genuinely– like, I don’t know. I’m so grateful. Like, you’re so kind.
TR: Aw.
TS: Like, what you’ve done. I can’t, like– I don’t know. [laugh] I don’t know what I can do. I, I– it’s so bizarre. It’s like, somebody on the other side of the world, is like, you know–
TR: Yeah–
TS: And they’re nice. [laughs]
TR: Ah, well you know, it’s… Sorry. — No, go on.
TS: I really– I really, really appreciate it.
TR: Oh, it’s perfectly fine. I have a lot of fun working on the website, so…
TS: If it, if it ever stops being fun, please, don’t worry about, like– [laughs] Do what you need to do. Live your life.
TR: Yeah. [laughs] Um, I set up this little website for fans to send me any questions to you.
TS: Yeah.
TR: And I received over a hundred questions.
TS: Okay.
TR: But I selected very few, so I don’t waste your time. [laughs]
TS: [laughs] Don’t worry, I, I never do anything– like, it’s very difficult to waste my time.
TR: Oh really? [laughs]
TS: [laughs]
TR: Well, um, the first question is from Faith in the USA. She, uh, wants to know– is there a particular movie or actor that you saw that inspired you to become an actor?
TS: Um, that inspired me to become an actor… Um, sor– who’s this from?
TR: Um, Faith.
TS: Hello, Faith. Um…
TR: [laughs]
TS: Uh.. to be honest, I– no… I don’t, I mean, I didn’t really want to be an actor when I was a ki– um, my parents were kind of involved in the industry, and so I was, I was–
TR: Yeah.
TS: — these two shades as a teenager, not really wanting to do what my parents do. And– uh. Really. I mean, my first job was with this guy– this Hungarian director named Istv? Szab?- and I, and I, basically– and I was really into film when I was young, and he was, he made this amazing film I loved, and so I just really wanted to meet him. And I then I feel like I could say I met this guy– and that, that, like– literally, he was stupid enough to give me a part in his film, ’cause the only way to meet him was just by auditioning. And it was kind of that experience of working with him, um, sort of inspired me to keep acting, and that it can be amazing.
TR: Okay. And Erin wants to know– Erin from the USA– wants to know: if you weren’t an actor, what would you be?
TS: If I wasn’t an actor?
TR: Yeah.
TS: Uh. God, I’d probably be– uh, I don’t know. Dead. Um.
TR: [laughs]
TS: [laughs] I would be– uh. [awesome laugh] When I, when I was a kid, I– I’ve been asked this a couple of times– like, I was– do you know what a thatched roof is?
TR: … I have no idea.
TS: In, in England, you have these roofs– um– like, like, as in, like, in roof of a house, right–
TR: Yep.
TS: Which, which are kind of made out of– uh, reeds… that are, like, um, woven together–
TR: Yeah.
TS: Like, woven reeds– like the grass.
TR: Yeah. [laughs]
TS: Well– this sounds really weird. [laughs]
TR: [laughs] Yeah, I know.
TS: When a kid, I was, like, obsessed with those roofs of– whenever my mom would drive past one of them when we were in the countryside, I would, like, ask to stop so I could look at them. And, like, I think if I wasn’t an actor– well, I’m not even sure if I am an actor, by the way, I–
TR: Well, you– [laughs]
TS: I’ve done much more non-acting than acting. Um. [laughs] The, the question, if I wasn’t an actor, um– I would want to make those roofs.
TR: [laughs] Okay.
TS: [laughs] Well. I’m so sorry, I’m [indecipherable].
TR: No, it’s fine. [laughs] Um, Mischa from the USA wants to know if you had a time machine and could travel back in time to Old Hollywood, what actor or actress would you want to work with in a film and why?
TS: Um. Wow. [laughs]
TR: Yeah. [laughs]
TS: If I had a time machine, I– I think I definitely wouldn’t go back to Old Hollywood. If I had a time machine, I’d want to see a dinosaur. [laughs] Um.
TR: Oh, really? [laughs]
TS: Well, I don’t know. I– having a time machine would be pretty f—ing amazing. I definitely–
TR: Yeah, I reckon…
TS: My first instinct would not be, like, Oh, I want to see an actor. I’d be like, I want to see– sort of– Lincoln. [laughs] But um.
TR: [laughs]
TS: But– no. If I was going to go back to Old Hollywood… Um. Ahhh… Ehh… I don’t know. How would you answer that question?
TR: … Oh.
TS: ‘Cause– is there anyone in Old Hollywood you’d want to meet?
TR: I have no idea. I’ve never thought about it.
TS: I like– there’s this, there’s this director, Elia Kazan? Um– who– he’s a kind of 1950′s, like New York director. He did on On the Waterfront, like a Marlon Brando film.
TR: Yeah.
TS: He was a pretty extraordinary man, I would’ve like to, want to kind of– just you know, even watch his drink, fill up his glasses in New York or something.
TR: Tiffany wants to know: other than the 60′s, what other era would you be interested in filming, and why?
TS: Um.. Interes… [laughs] Let me think. Um. I mean, I think, I think– you know, the thing about the world is that it’s so kind of– complicated and deep as it, it always has been since the beginning, so I think it’s– always, I think it’s almost, I feel– unfair, um, to all eras if I try to kind of isolate one. I mean, I, ha ha– [laughs] if I get an opportunity to film or be a part of any era, that would be a miracle. Um.
TR: Yeah. [laughs]
TS: I don’t think I could select one… [fade]
