TS – Tom Sturridge

TS: Uh, hello?
TR: Hi! Hi.
TS: How are you?
TR: I’m great, thanks! How are you?
TS: [laughs] I’m not doing too bad.
TR: [laughs] Thanks so much for taking the time– to do this interview with me.
TS: That’s okay, I just, I got, I got all your questions before and I, I started typing out, ah, and I thought, I just, I thought, I just felt a bit stupid. I thought it, I thought I could be quite honest, when I talk to somebody. Where, where are you calling from?
TR: I’m from Australia.
TS: Which– which part?
TR: Um, Melbourne.
TS: Oh, cool. Actually, I’ve never been– no, I did a film in, um, Adelaide and–
TR: Ah, yeah.
TS: — in Sydney– but I’ve never been to Melbourne. I think the film I just did, they just did a premiere there. Like, about a week–
TR: Yeah. So should I start with the first question?
TS: [laughs] If you want, yeah, I’m kinda scared…
TR: Don’t worry, I’ve selected normal questions. I received really scary ones, but don’t worry. [laughs]
TS: [laughs] Okay.
TR: Um, it’s been awhile since fans have seen you in a film production. Uh, what encouraged you to take on this role, in The Boat That Rocked?
TS: In the Boat That Rocked? Um, just– uh, the, the people involved. I mean– I just, um, I, you know, I was really excited to be a part of anything that, that had Richard Curtis– especially at the helm, but then [PSH, BN, ET, KB]– these actors that I genuinely admired, and I just wanted to you know– just have the opportunity to– kind of, stand relatively close to them for a little bit. [laughs]
TR: [laughs] And what was it like to work with them?
TS: Um. It was great– a little terrifying. Like–
TR: Yeah?
TS: Like– well, like, well, well, what do you do? Like, are you– are you in school or, like–
TR: Sorry?
TS: Like– what do you do in Australia? Are you, are you in school now or you work–
TR: I’m a university student.
TS: Um–
TR: A university student.
TS: What do you study?
TR: Public relations.
TS: Public relations?
TR: Yeah. [laughs]
TS: Wow. [awesome laugh] Uh– well, I think, well, basically, you know, it’s like anything, it’s like if you, you know, you join a PR company and– you’re at a good PR company– you’re working with people who are just the best at their jobs, like, and it’s just, and you just want to show them that you can maybe do a little bit like them– you know, that you’re not going to be embarrassing–
TR: Yeah.
TS: — so, which is kind of, that’s how I felt. It’s, it’s scary– but luckily, you know, over– over time, you know, we got to know each other, and I saw them a little bit more as human beings, and not as… [laughs]
TR: [laughs] Uh, which such a comical cast, were there, like, any funny happenings behind the scenes?
TS: [laughs] Um… I mean, well, the weird, the weird thing about the way we shot it is that– we had, like, three cameras filming all the time, so there were moments–
TR: Oh really?
TS: So, when we got on the boat, there was always one camera running, so we kind of never stopped– working. –Have you, have you seen the film– yet? Has it come out in Australia yet?
TR: Oh, no. It just came out today, but I haven’t had the time to go out and see it yet. But I will.
TS: — okay– but it, but, basically, it was kind of a messy, kind of, all over the place– so, it was, a lot of it was improvised. And basically, what, what I’m saying is, all of the funny stuff and the pranks were, were filmed, so all, anything that was funny was in the film.
TR: The Boat that Rocked was based in the era in the 60′s. Um– what’s your favourite thing about that time?
